US to End Dropbox Visa Renewals from September 2: What You Need to Know

Starting September 2, 2025, the U.S. Department of State will end the Dropbox visa renewal program, also known as the Interview Waiver Program, for most nonimmigrant visa holders. This means that applicants renewing H-1B, L-1, F-1, J-1, and O-1 visas will be required to attend an in-person interview at U.S. embassies or consulates. Previously, many of these applicants were eligible for an interview waiver, streamlining the visa renewal process. This policy change will have significant implications for individuals seeking to renew their US visa, and it's crucial to understand the new requirements ahead of time.

This rollback is part of broader immigration policy changes signed into law under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" on July 4, 2025. The U.S. Department of State has cited the need to enhance security measures and improve the vetting process for visa applicants as the primary reasons behind this shift.

Who Will Be Affected?

The termination of the Dropbox program will affect many categories of visa holders, including:

  • Work Visas: H-1B, L-1, O-1
  • Student Visas: F-1, M-1, J-1
  • Dependent Visas: H-4, L-2, J-2

Even applicants under 14 or over 79, who were previously exempt from the in-person interview requirement, will now generally need to attend an interview as well. The only exceptions to this new policy will be for certain diplomatic and official visa categories (such as A-1, A-2, G-1 to G-4, and NATO-1 to NATO-6).

Limited Exceptions for B Visa Renewals

While most visa categories will be affected, applicants renewing B-1/B-2 visas (tourist and business) or Border Crossing Cards (BCC) may still qualify for an interview waiver if they meet the following criteria:

  • The visa renewal is within 12 months of the prior visa's expiration.
  • The applicant was at least 18 years old when the prior visa was issued.
  • The application is submitted in the applicant's country of nationality or residence.
  • The applicant has no history of visa refusals, unless previously waived.
  • The applicant has no apparent ineligibilities.

Even if the above conditions are met, consular officers still retain the discretion to require an in-person interview.

Impact on Visa Processing Times

The end of the Dropbox visa renewal program is expected to lead to:

  • Increased Demand for Interview Slots: With more applicants required to attend in-person interviews, securing an appointment may become more challenging.
  • Longer Wait Times: High-demand visa categories, such as H-1B and F-1, may experience significant delays in appointment availability.
  • Potential Travel Disruptions: Applicants currently in the U.S. with expired visas may face difficulties re-entering the country without a valid visa stamp, leading to potential employment and academic disruptions.

What Applicants Should Do

To navigate these changes effectively:

  1. Apply Early: Begin your visa application process as soon as possible to secure an interview slot before the policy change takes effect.
  2. Prepare for In-Person Interviews: Ensure all required documentation is complete and accurate. Practice common interview questions to be well-prepared.
  3. Monitor Consulate Websites: Regularly check the U.S. embassy or consulate website in your country for updates on appointment availability and specific requirements.
  4. Consider Travel Plans: If you are currently in the U.S. and need to travel abroad, plan accordingly to accommodate the new interview requirements.
