H1B Visa Interview Experience – Hyderabad Consulate, April 2026

Applicant Background

The applicant attended an H1B visa renewal interview at the U.S. Consulate in Hyderabad in April 2026. They had been staying in India since January but faced multiple visa scheduling delays before eventually securing an emergency appointment based on a genuine medical condition that required treatment in the United States. Supporting documents from the hospital and treating doctor were submitted as part of the emergency request. The applicant was accompanied by their spouse, who was applying for an H4 visa renewal.

H1B Visa Interview Experience – Hyderabad

The applicant described the overall interview as short and straightforward.

Interview Conversation

Visa Officer: Are you returning or is this your first time?

Applicant: Returning.

Visa Officer: How long have you been with your company?

Applicant: 11 years.

Visa Officer: They must be treating you well.

Applicant: Smiled and replied Yes.

The visa officer then turned to the applicant’s spouse.

Visa Officer: Have you had an H4 before?

Spouse: Yes.

At this stage, the visa officer mentioned that they were unable to locate the applicant’s PIMS record in the system. The applicants were asked to visit another counter before returning.

After reaching the secondary counter, the staff requested a photocopy of the applicant’s I-797 approval notice. Once submitted, the applicants returned to the same visa officer.

Visa Officer: I’m sorry it’s taking so long, the system just can’t find your PIMS. I hope it gets cleared soon so you can be on your way.

The applicants were then handed a white slip indicating administrative processing.

Administrative Processing & Final Approval

Initially, the applicants were not overly concerned after receiving the administrative processing slip, as many applicants have reportedly been receiving similar notices due to increased social media vetting procedures.

Interestingly, the visa status changed to “Approved” on the same day as the interview. However, the following day, the status reverted to “Received.” Approximately 10 days later, the status changed back to “Approved,” and the passports were delivered within 2–3 days after that.

Overall, the applicant spent around 4.5 months in India because of appointment availability and processing delays.

U.S. Port of Entry Experience

The applicant also shared their experience upon re-entering the United States. They expected additional questioning at immigration due to the administrative processing phase but reported that the entry process was smooth.

The immigration officer simply checked the passports and I-797 approval notice before welcoming them back to the United States.

Final Thoughts

This H1B renewal experience highlights how administrative processing or temporary system-related issues, such as missing PIMS records, do not necessarily indicate a visa denial. Despite delays and status fluctuations, the application was ultimately approved successfully.

Applicants attending H1B visa interviews in India should remain patient during the processing period and ensure they carry all supporting documents, including copies of their I-797 approval notices.
